Staying Clean and Organized during a Camping Trip
Roughing it does not mean that it is all right to be messy. When going on a camping trip in the wilderness, it is important to maintain cleanliness and organization not only to ward off possible bear attacks but also to keep everything safe, healthy, and sanitized. Although this can be quite challenging given the situation that you are in the middle of a forest, you can still maintain cleanliness and organization by following these practical tips:
- Check the weather forecast – What does the weather have to do with cleanliness in the campsite? Being prepared is one important aspect of maintaining cleanliness. If weather forecast predicts a rainy weather during your camping trip, you need to prepare for the possibility of wet and muddy campers who would inevitably soil the entire campsite including the tents and sleeping area. Even if the forecast predicts clean and dry weather, you should still prepare for the possibility of rain.
- Organize camping equipment in an orderly manner – Organize all the pieces of camping gear and personal equipment such as lanterns, sleeping area, kitchen utensils, personal supplies, clothing and tents. Camping would require you to bring so many things to ensure that you have a comfortable and worthwhile stay at the campsite but if it takes you the whole day to find whatever it is you are looking for, you surely would be wasting a lot of time that you could have spent instead on camping activities. Be sure to organize the things according to their category so you know where to find them quickly and easily.
- Seal your tent – Keeping your tent sealed at all times would prevent water, dirt, dust, or sand from getting in. You don’t want to sleep on a dirty, dusty, or muddy tent, right? It would also be a good idea to have a floor mat right in front of your tent so that people can wipe their feet first before coming in.
- Practice clean and safe cooking – Keep food clean by covering plates, pots, and pans at all times. Wash plates and eating utensils thoroughly with a biodegradable antibacterial dishwashing solution. Secure food after eating. Keep leftovers in the cooler only if there is sufficient ice left. Moreover, make sure that you don’t expose raw meat, poultry or fish as this can accumulate bacteria and cause health problems.
- Wash your hands– Washing hands is a good habit. This can keep you free of germs and bacteria that are found all over the campsite. While it is not necessary to wash your hands every minute, you need to do so before and after eating, after going to the bathroom, or after handling something that is not so clean. It would also be practical to keep a hand sanitizer handy for easy and convenient use.
- Keep the campsite clean – Of course, you also need to keep the entire campsite spick and span. Don’t litter or leave trash lying around. Always have large trash bags for the garbage.
Keeping yourself and the campsite clean and organized during your camping vacation is not rocket science. It only requires simple measures of sealing the tent, safe cooking, cleaning of the campsite, and so on.
